Personal Background:
Jim earned a black belt in Okinawan Shobayashi Shorin Ryu karate-do, a purple belt in Ying Jow Pai (Eagle Claw) Gung Fu, studied the Japanese art of Aikido for 2.5 years, as well as Jerry Peterson's SCARS close-quarters combat and Tim Larkin's Target Focus Training. He designed and taught a self-defense training that graduated over 400 students.
A native of Washington, D.C. and the only son of a former NFL fullback and MLB catcher, he grew up in a house full of females… eight sisters, and survived — just barely! He moved to California at 21 years old to follow a dream and after 41 years returned to the east coast in 2015, currently residing in Raleigh, NC.
Jim was married in Venice, Italy, and has three children. He has studied several languages, achieving the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Intermediate High Level in French and Italian. He is an International Open Water certified SCUBA diver. As a teenager, he served three summers on Capitol Hill in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Congressional Page.
One of his most profound experiences has been a Jesuit education during six formative years. Their philosophy of service—being a “man for others” was ingrained in Jim and includes a year on the San Francisco Child Abuse Council and two years on the board of directors for the San Diego Community Congress, a certified United Way Agency.
